The Flame Will Protect Commentary by Tree Adams Lyrics
[Spoken]
Track 3 is a cue called "The Flame Will Protect", and this was from episode 3.16, where Clarke takes the Flame and enters the City of Light. We have our City of Light arpeggiated synth pulse going on underneath, using a lot of the "virus" synth for that. Also some ostinatos on top of pulsing strings, and sort of an adventure chord progression of sorts that's evolving below it all. You know, we've got full strings and brass section goin', and on top of the whole thing, we have this vocalist Elizabeth Scott, who we feature throughout the season, and she's a fantastic singer, and she's just been another element in the soup throughout, and I feel like somehow her voice often, it speaks to sort of our main character Clarke a lot, it can just be the soul of what we're seeing at times. She's wailing on top of this whole cue, in a great way, to kind of lead us into this adventure in the City of Light.
And then obviously, this is just as they put the Flame in Clarke. And for the Flame, which is essentially the spirit of the Commander, we've always used this little horror motif, like a (?), you know, root five, just to kind of embody the weight that she bears there. And I think underneath the tendrils shooting out of the Flame, we've done a lot with the synth base kind of angulating, we wanted to clear a little room up top for Charlie Crutcher, who's doing the sound effects, so that he could do more, kind of upper-register things around there, and that's been a lot of fun to work on that.
