Madonna Inn 2011 Remix by The Swirling Eddies Lyrics
[Spoken Intro: Terry Scott Taylor]
I remember being really impressed by the first time, as a kid, when i went to the Madonna Inn, which is this hotel that's located just outside of San Luis Obispo by the side of the 101. And I remember going into the restroom, ’cause we'd heard things about the men's and women’s restrooms that sort of were unique, you know, to them. And in the men's room, the urinal was this waterfall, you know, with a water wheel in there, you know. And that was really something for us. Never stayed there, but my wife and I have actually sort of toured the place, because what's unique to this hotel, aside from it being this kitschy kind of ranch-style, and if you've ever seen the set of the "PTL Club," you'll know exactly what I'm talking about--it's this kind of gaudy, ornamental, Graceland type of style. And my wife and I visited this place because what's unique to it, as I said, was that each room, most of the rooms are themed rooms, and that’s why honeymooners still like to go there as a destination. Some find it wonderful in a sort of dazzling way, and others find it way over the top and, like I said, gaudy and sort of, you know, almost laughable in some ways. But I was getting ready to do a Swirling Eddies record--the latest--and I recalled, for some reason, in the course of my writing these songs, that my niece and her husband had gone to the Madonna Inn for their honeymoon. So I thought I’d write a song about two people on their way, two married people on their way to the Madonna Inn. And in it, I thought that I would get--if you listen closely to the lyrics, you'll find that I’m exploring the idea of this sort of Sunday morning religious commitment. You'll hear this in the lyric, as opposed to, as they say, "living like hell six days out of the week." And that comes in the line concerning the Gideon Bible. So watch out for that one.
[Verse 1]
Baby, let's drive to Madonna Inn
It's a honeymoon, I’m gonna see you swoon
Giddy with love in the Caveman Room
I'll drape you in printed sheets of zebra skin
At Madonna Inn
[Verse 2]
Baby, let's drive to Madonna Inn
We'll have a ball, they got rocks on the wall
A urinal that looks just like a waterfall
Tonight we'll get that nice pink sauna skin
At Madonna Inn
[Chorus 1]
Well, say hello to Saint Luis Obispo
It's got its very own city, it's waiting at our beck and call
And who needs that boring old San Francisco?
They got the Golden Gate, we'll call it second-rate
Once we've kissed by the bubblegum wall
[Verse 3]
Baby, let's drive to Madonna Inn
I've saved up my dough, just so you know
You're my Lady Madonna, I'm your Holy Joe
We'll do everything righteous that your mama calls sin
At Madonna Inn
[Chorus 2]
For every guest, in the desk they've got a Gideon's Bible
Come Sunday morning, everything in there's true
But Friday night is no time right for revival
We'll stay on our toes, keep that little door closed
And do what good cave people do
[Verse 1]
Baby, let's drive to Madonna Inn
It's a honeymoon, I'm gonna see you swoon
Giddy with love in the Caveman Room
I'll drape you in printed sheets of zebra skin
At Madonna Inn
[Outro]
Tonight we'll get that nice pink sauna skin
At Madonna Inn
We'll do everything righteous that your mama calls sin
At Madonna Inn
