Reason by The Jordan Project Lyrics
Epicurus once said, "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able, then he is not omnipotent
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
This quote epitomizes what we know as "The Problem of Pain." If this world was simple, this would indeed be a problem, but, this world is simply not plain
Let's go back to the basics, because if this message is truly significant, why should we encrypt it?
Who are you, it is none other than You. Who am I, I am an other. Recognize that we are different, we think separately, I can only receive one of your thoughts if you've sent it
Here lies the problem. Once I've recognized that I am separate from you, I can then choose, to act in favor of you, or in favor of me
If I want more food, then why should you eat? Even though we are in essence equals, why should I treat you that way?
You see, the presence of multiple persons instead of one individual human creates the opportunity for discord
Whereas if one person could live life entirely alone, that would take away every vile opportunity of evil, but we must ask ourselves
Is that even life?
To live as an automaton with a heartbeat, in futility true life we would hopelessly seek
But life is only enlightened by love, and what is love if it is not contrasted with evil? Is silence truly peace if it is without people?
Sin did not come in until there were two people, but even they were not obligated to choose evil
They willingly bit into the knowledge of good and evil, and it remains in us still, it is now called the moral law, and it did not take effect until our fall
Every day this choice confronts us all, to act selfishly or act selflessly and answer the Call
We often question why the fall but the better question is why the Call?
If evil circumvented good then we would hit a wall and realize that good is no longer an option
But the One above it all opted to save us even after our fall, He purchased the key to free us by hanging tall on that tree
On the cross bearing all of our iniquity, and what use are our shackles if there is a key involved?
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
