"Proud to be denounced" by Ta Phong Tan
<<"A country that lets even a part of its people live in embarrassing and inhumane conditions is a country with no future." - Nicole Maestracci, , warned the President of France Nicolas Sarkozy about the rise of poverty through the worrying negative behaviors such as supermarket shop-lifting, and the number of homeless people.>> (Youth, 11/16/2009)
In Vietnam, whenever people want to avoid paying for the consequences of their actions, they often use these very general pronouns, so that nobody would bear the responsibilities. For example, "We", "our group", "our team"…; when talking to president Nicolas Sarkozy, Nicole Maetracci used the word "A country". That not only refers to the entire people of France, but also conveys a very clear warning: It is you, Nicolas Sarkozy, the current President and the top leader of France, who must take responsibility for letting a part of your people live in poverty, homelessness, and crime. You have put France in danger of becoming a poor and old-fashioned nation. You do not have the capabilities of leading a country
A harsh criticism, isn't it? If the criticized has self-respect, it would hurt a lot more
In reality, during these peaceful days, no French citizens would have their land, their home, their farms confiscated;
No French citizens get arrested, slandered, expropriated of their property... for showing their love for their nation and hatred towards invaders;
No French citizens has their rights of free speech and free movement oppressed with government tools
And pressures such as arresting, terminating their employments, preventing corporations from employing them, and restricting them from opening a new company; then has their dignity and reputation unfairly sullied by journal articles;
No French citizens gets their skull filled with lies and propagandas by their government;
No French citizens gets repressed for exposing their country's corruptions;
No French citizens gets kidnapped, severely beaten and has their properties robbed by "strange ships" without any defense from French government (or barely defend after continuous pressures of people for a long time);
No French citizens must be in duty of defending the country while the French Army sleeps like a log;
No French citizens sits on the rice field with an empty stomach;
No French citizens gets their mouths shut for speaking the truth about ill management, human rights "deterioration", power abuse, ignorance, irresponsibility… of the "People's Parents";
No French citizens gets deprived of the right to vote, the right to select their political representatives;
No French citizens has their freedom of religion violated and their churches stolen from them;
No French citizens to whom the buck is passed by the government for the damage and casualties caused by natural disasters;
No French citizens is prevented from accessing to how the French government spends their taxes, and how much national debt it must pay;
No French citizens gets trapped by vague laws set by the government;
No French citizens complaining about unfairness only to get the profiles of the family members, from their grandparents down to them, investigated and then defamed that they have either been provoked by dissident individuals or received fund from rebellious organizations;
No French citizens has their lawyers threatened and arrested by the government to prevent them from defending in a trial;
No French citizens has themselves judged unfairly by secret trials;
Etc
A week has passed, I kept on waiting, for any articles (or Internet gossips) on Nicole Maetracci reporting her status, feeling "under the weather", wanting to "resign", or the French President ordering any "Intelligence organization" such as RG - Renseignements Généraux , DST - Direction de la Surveillance Territoriale , DGSE - Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure to investigate the reason behind her actions, whether she is crazy, dissatisfied, has a sinister background, anything that she even dared to talk down to the great President about his leadership. None of them came up
Despite only "a part" of the French live in these "embarrassing and inhumane conditions" being poverty, theft, homelessness (which common, even omnipresent in Vietnam), the President has already been criticized so much that he could not even wipe his own sweat; imagine if the French people lived in the conditions listed above, he would have become minced meat by now
Though being denounced, Nicolas Sarkozy should be proud. The French Republic is still better than any "paradises" that are promoted in the world
It is a blessing for a person to live in a country that has its people willingly denounce their leader. It is a blessing for a person to live in a country with a humble leader, who can take harsh criticisms without retaliation
And it is a curse for a person to live in a country that takes away the human rights of its people, which are undeniable rights of a person to make that person different from animals, and it means taking away their dignities
