Due November 1, 2013
For this honors project, you will publish and annotate a public text related to Animal Farm on Rap Genius. You will take responsibility and ownership for a text in an exciting, growing public space, and inscribe your name forever on the wall of history!
Project Objectives:
Student will be able to…
1) Publish a relevant text for public annotation on Rap Genius, including editor’s note and accompanying audio or video
2) make culturally/thematically/historically significant text-to-text connections between the text he/she has chosen and Animal Farm
3) utilize all functions of annotations on Rap Genius
a. Hyperlinks (linking to sources both internal and external to R.G.)
b. Embedded videos
c. Images
4) present his/her work to classmates
Calendar:
10/15/13 Tuesday – Tell Mr. Briggs which text you plan to add to Rap Genius
10/18/13 Friday – Publish the agreed-upon text
10/21/13 Monday – Establish a minimum number of annotations with Mr. Briggs
10/25/13 Friday – Mark on RG the lines you wish to annotate, announce existence to classmates in case they wish to add their own annotations or leave suggestions
11/1/13 Friday – Finish minimum number of annotations. Present the page to the class, discuss the text you chose, annotations you made, and feedback you’ve received
Ideas for relevant texts to add to Poetry Genius (Don't add them if they already exist!):
Make an Album of Poems by Vladimir Mayakovsky:
“Ode to the Revolution”
“Left March”
“150,000,000”
“Vladimir Ilyich Lenin”
“It’s Good”
An important section of The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx
An essay from Jeffrey Meyers’s George Orwell: The Critical Heritage Series
“I Tried to Be A Communist” – An essay by Richard Wright
“War and Revolution in Russia” By Dr. Jonathan Smele
“A Russian Fairytale” by Phillip Guedalla
…Or one of the following relevant texts also by George Orwell:
Chapter One of 1984
Chapter One of Homage to Catalonia
Part of Road to Wigan Pier about socialism
“Looking Back on the Spanish War” (preface to Ukrainian edition of AF)
“Politics and the English Language” - essay
“Catastrophic Gradualism” - essay
Feel free to research and suggest your own, relevant texts. You may already have some in mind! Just remember they have to be culturally, historically, or thematically relevant to Animal Farm.
Please see me with any questions or confusion you may have along the way. I am here to help!
