GMOs in School Lunches - Green Unit by Miss Finley, Humanities Teacher at Boston Green Academy Lyrics
Green Unit
Theme: Food Justice
Assignment: GMO LETTER
HUMANITIES 2
THE ASSIGNMENT:
DUE: Tue, June 3rd, 8pm in Google Docs
Should green schools allow GMOs in school lunches?
An Argument Based Letter
The Scenario:
Recently, a proposal passed from the school committee to the state legislator to expand the Meal Program to provide free breakfast and lunch to all BPS schoolchildren.
------
“Boston public schools will begin serving free lunches to all students this school year, even if families have the financial means to pay, school officials are expected to announce Tuesday.
The meal program, more than a year in the making, is part of an experimental federal initiative that aims to make it easier for students from low-income families to receive free meals by eliminating the need to fill out paperwork, including potentially invasive questions about income.”

-------
The Problem:
What is little known is that this proposal also includes an added measure to allow Boston Public School’s food suppliers to use GMOs in school breakfast and lunches.
Should green schools be concerned with GMOs in school food? Why or why not? What does this have to do with sustainability, from a teen perspective?
The task:
a) Investigate: Find out about GMOs, the risk and the rewards
b) Write a Letter to the Co-Headmasters, Matt Holzer and Natalie Jaeger telling them what you think about GMOs in school lunches and making a recommendation of whether or not as a green school, GMOs in our food is an important enough issue for or school-wide concern next year.
