Annotating Chaucers Truth by Kristen Aldebol Lyrics
Step 1, translation.
Step 2, Poetry Genius.
Students translate the first seven lines of Chaucer's poem "Truth" as the first part of the assignment. For the second part of the assignment, they choose a word or phrase from the poem, translate the Middle English to modern English, and explain what makes that word or phrase important to understanding the poem.
This assignment develops students' understanding of the poem by asking them to move beyond the first step of translating the Middle English enough to understand what is happening in the text (which is a huge step, of course). The Poetry Genius annotation portion allows them to use their translation to look beyond the literal meaning of the Middle English words.
