Feature: CrossFit motivating college students by Kimberly Dupuis Lyrics
by Kimberly Dupuis
Large overwhelming gyms make some students weary about working out. It’s hard for students to get into a work out routine in environments they don’t feel comfortable.
“When I started college I lost the aspect of sports, although I was still doing marching band which kept me active in a moderate manner,” said Jocelyn Bugan, a senior at UMass Amherst. “I would go to the gym sometimes, but it was so big and overwhelming and always crowded with people.”
“I discovered crossfit because my older cousin who was a big football player started getting really into it. At first I just watched from a distance, but at the end of my junior year of college I decided to try it out, said Bugan. “I did a lot of and I learned that crossfit was a tight-knit community of people who loved working out together, which is something that people on sports teams feel.”
According to WebMD There are hundreds of CrossFit exercises. Here are a few examples the website offers:
Power Cleans: Pulling a weighted bar from the floor and bringing it up to and in front of your shoulders in a quick and forceful manner.
Burpees: This is a body-weight-only exercise that involves beginning in a standing position, quickly dropping to the floor and doing a push-up, then coming up to a squatting position and explosively jumping straight-up.
The Snatch: A weighted bar is rapidly pulled from the floor to directly over your head with the arms held straight.
Thruster: This exercise begins with standing upright with weighted bar held in front of your shoulders. You squat down to the point where your thighs are parallel to the floor, then quickly standing back-up and pressing the weighted bar over your head.
“Getting through a workout is the most satisfying feeling,” said Bugan.
“I always feel so accomplished,” said Bugan. ” Crossfit has done more for me than just teach me about working out. I have also learned so much about nutrition and the paleo lifestyle which has had a really positive effect on my body.”
Bugan has lost over 20 pounds since the May of 2013. “I have more energy when I work out and eat right, which reflects positively in other aspects of my life as well. I would recommend crossfit for anyone who feels like normal gyms aren’t doing the job for them.”
