P. 13 June 5 by Kenneth Patchen Lyrics
June 5, 1940
Hitler hurled seven hundred thousand men in a drive on Paris at dawn today
In direct frontal attack, forty five German divisions supported by one thousand dive bombers, twenty-five hundred tanks, fifteen thousand motorized vehicles struck at French positions on 110-mile front stretching across northern France from the English Channel to Leon.
The hand of someone moves over my throat. I have no fear.
A whale with a sad smile swims past me.
The waves are red as blood.
The human race has bled to death here.
A great steel coffin churns through the water.
There are buildings falling. I am cold.
Put your arms around me.
