‘Why didn’t you answer my text?’ he signed slowly. I know that the girls don’t understand sign language so I signed instead of speaking. ‘I was driving and this girl,’ I pointed at Kay, her face instantly turning offended, ‘was being nosy. You know Kay, can’t mind her own business.’ I signed back. He chuckled quietly and I let out a giggle in return. Kay looked from me to Corbyn, mouth wide, “What are you guys laughing about?” she stated, defensively. We both looked at her at the same time I said nothing, and the same time Corbyn signed it. Corbyn looked at me and we both broke out into laughter, his laugh quieter than mine. Gabbie and Kay started to drag me away from Corbyn toward Chemistry, so I waved at him. As we walked away, leaving Corbyn at my locker, Gabbie looked over at me and started rambling. We got to the Chemistry classroom door and walked in quietly. The classroom was loud and different from the silent hall we just came from. Gabbie went to her seat in the front next to this kid named Jack. He had this large nest of curls on the top of his head, which was a light shade of brown with an odd red tint. His face seemed to glow whenever Gabbie was around, he might like her was my last thought before me and Kay sat down. Mrs. Norris, the Chemistry teacher, wasn’t in the classroom yet so the whole class was talking. I peered around the kids head in front of me and saw Jack trying to talk to Gabbie. He kept getting flustered and she was giggling at his nervousness. I was in such deep thought about Jack and Gabbie’s relationship that Kay had to shake me to get my attention.
I looked at her, “What do you need Kay?” I asked in an annoyed tone. She looked at me bewildered for a second, “Sorry for interrupting whatever that was,” she said in a rude tone, “but, that boy in the hallway was that Corbyn boy from yesterday, right?” she said, her tone changing to one of a focused individual. I looked at her, the heat in face growing at her intent for the answer.
“Yes, it was, is that a problem?” I asked, trying to hide my face from her. She shook her head, her eyes in that lovey dovey state again. I knew what she was thinking, her and Gabbie both truly believed that I liked Corbyn. Obviously they are wrong, though he was really funny and nice, he was perfect in every way but, I don’t like him. I rolled my eyes and turned back to stare at Gabbie and Jack. Mrs. Norris finally came into the room and started to talk about Chemistry, I wasn’t paying attention. I was looking at the clock, anticipating the next period. Kay kept eyeing me during class, I knew she wanted to say something. An hour later, the bell finally rang. I let out a breath of relief as I packed up my textbook. I was walking to my locker when Kay came and walked next to me. “I’m really sorry, Cass. I know you don’t…” I cut her off with a hug. It’s fine, was the only thing I could manage to say at the moment. I was obviously mad at her but I couldn’t lose my best friend. Kay left me for her class and I went to mine. I walked into the class and, as soon as I walked in the door, was greeted by Mr. Slinger clapping. I was extremely confused, I looked around the room and everybody else was clapping. Some people were as confused as I was, but others looked happy, they knew what was going on. I looked back at Mr. Slinger, he raised his hand and the entire class fell silent.
He took in a harsh breath, “You are one of,” he looked up at Corbyn, before continuing, “of the only people who got a 100 on the Up Until Now quiz we took yesterday.” He smiled brightly at me. My face started to burn. I can’t believe he just did that. I walked to my seat next to Jonah, who wasn’t here today. I didn’t think anything of it, due to the fact that I didn’t like him very much. I was writing the notes from the board and I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket. I pulled it out and sat it on my leg so the teacher couldn’t see. It was a message from Corbyn, I opened it. He sent me a meme of Chuck Norris giving a thumbs up. It said good job at the bottom. I giggled silently. Happy that Jonah wasn’t here.
I replied with a Will Ferrell meme with the words, well done my good sir on it. I looked back at Corbyn, he had that bright beautiful smile on his face. My mood just kind of rose seeing his smile. His soft lips curving in the most perfect way. I turned around to face Mr. Slinger as he cleared his throat and gave me his, “pay attention” eyes. I slid my phone back into my pocket and continued class.
The day passed slowly, until finally it was lunch time. I was walking with Kay and Gabbie, as usual. They were talking about something as I walked to their left swinging my water bottle slightly. They both looked at me, “Everything ok? Why so quiet?” they asked me in unison. I said I was fine before I opened the door to the lunchroom. I saw Corbyn sitting at his normal table with someone else. I didn’t know this guy, never seen him before. He had bleached the top of his brown hair blond. It looked good, yet so unnatural. He had a big smile on his face, I could see from the distance his eyes. They were a bright electric blue. The most beautiful blue I’d ever seen. I walked slowly across the cafeteria toward Corbyn’s table. I sat down right in front of Corbyn, he looked over at me and smiled his beautiful smile. I stared into his teal eyes, getting lost in them as usual. Daniel looked up from the floor, his eyes went from Corbyn to me and back to Corbyn. “Who’s this?” I asked Corbyn.
Daniel looked at me like I was crazy, “I’m Dan-” was all he could muster up before I interrupted him with, “He can answer himself, he’s a big boy.” I looked at Daniel. His eyes widened, “You know he doesn’t talk right?” he said, sass filling his voice.
“No dip.” I said in a rude way. I wasn’t trying to be mean, it just came out like that. “Now, Corbyn who’s this….person?” I said, looking back to Corbyn.
He’d been looking between me and Daniel with a confused look on his face. ‘This is my best friend, Daniel’ he signed. I nodded and looked back to Daniel. Who had gone back to looking at the floor.
