The Family Poe Part 1 by Jonathan Christenson Lyrics

Genre: pop | Year: 2016

[Henry]
My name is Henry!

[Rosie]
I'm Rosie

[Henry]
He's Edgar

[Rosie]
Our mother's the actress Eliza Poe

[Edgar]
Wherever we go, people swoon for Eliza

[Rosie]
The greatest young actress they ever did know!

[Verse 1]
From a very young age, Henry loved to explore
(He was ever the curious kind)
And wherever he went, Edgar and Rosie followed to see what he'd find
And from these excursions he built a collection
[Henry]
These things nobody wants

He said
And ever so gently these objects he placed on the table right next to his bed:

A broken seashell, an ink-stained quill, half a love letter torn in two
A handkerchief that was covered in blood and a ribbon of faded blue
A beetle with wings that shimmered like gold, a crayfish I pulled from the river
A clear glass vial with a label that said “Doctor Sheldon's Pills For The Liver”

But! The object he prized above all else, even the hand-drawn map
(which he claimed would lead him to Captain Kidd's treasure)
Was the skull he once found of a cat

[Rosie]
Wow...

[Henry]
My name is Henry! Leonard! Poe! Seeker of fortune and fame!
I'm carefree, I'm wild, by thrills I'm beguiled, adventure is my middle name!

[Verse 2]
Edgar and Rosie adored their brother
Could have burst, they were so proud
They knew the feeling was mutual
Though t’was never said aloud
[Henry]
Boo!

Once, when Edgar wasn't well

[Edgar]
Achoo

And Rosie sat at the foot of his bed

[Rosie]
It's alright, Edgar

Henry lent him his prized souvenir

[Henry]
To keep til you're well

He said

[Henry]
My name is Henry

[Rosie]
I'm Rosie
[Edgar]
I'm Edgar

[All three]
We are the family Poe
Poe is a name that will grow in its fame
One that one day the whole world will know

Edgar and Rosie knew Henry had dreams that were big as a boy’s could be
They knew Henry had places he planned to go and things he dreamed he would see

[Henry]
In Barataria Bay, with pirates I one day will stroll
And in castles of ice I will offer advice
To the king to the Antarctic pole!
From ocean to air the next feat I will dare in my own transatlantic balloon!
After crossing the sea in just three days will be nothing less than a trip to the moon!

Now, Henry was ever the optimist
Unlike Edgar, who mostly did fret
While Henry's glass was always half full
Edgar's was just barely wet

[Henry]
I always imagine that life will get better

[Edgar]
I fear it will only get worse

[Henry]
I always believe if we work for it, somehow our fortunes will someday reverse

[Verse 3]
Their fortunes included a mother whose three little children would always come second
And a father who mostly was found at the bar where a bottle of bourbon beckoned
So, each morning Edgar and wee Rosalie were woken by Henry's sweet mug

[Henry]
RISE AND SHINE!

And each night it was he that tucked them in
Snug as two bugs in a rug

[Henry]
Sleepy time!

And now that their father was gone for good, things were calmer, at least, than before
No more shouting

[David Poe]
I hate you!

Or crying

[Eliza]
You're useless...

Or slamming the door
And knowing he now was the man of the house, Henry rose to the delicate task

[Eliza]
Showtime!

Even though he was no more than eight years old, and nobody bothered to ask

[Henry]
Break a leg!

Still, the devoted elder brother somehow managed to cope
With his head full of schemes
And plenty of dreams
And a heart just as big as his hope
And he vowed

[Henry]
Come what may, I'll make certain nothing and no one will ever sever
The ties that bind Henry, and Edgar, and wee Rosalie together forever
