The Iliad Book IXClassProject by Homer (Greek Text) Lyrics
So far in Homers Iliad, the Trojans had just pushed the Achaean soldiers back to their ships, where they sat in defeat trying to figure out what to do next. Agamemnon especially felt disheartened and had just confessed his own self pity and proposed returning back home in shame when Diomed stands up to give a rallying speech, which succeeds in rekindling some hope in the crestfallen soldiers. Nestor also addresses Agamemnon and encourages him to attempt to make peace with Achilles. Seeing the potential in this Agamemnon decides to present him with multiple gifts to try to make up for the prize they fought over. He also summons the best soldiers in the Achaean army to deliver his offer. Upon hearing his offer Achilles still declines on the pretense that the Gods had prophesied that this battle would mark a fulcrum in his life, either he would fight and die young or he would continue to distance himself from the fighting and live a long and content life.
