Often in works of literature, a character takes part in a great battle, either literally or figuratively.

From a work of literature you have read in or out of school, select a character who takes part in either a literal or a figurative battle. In a well-developed composition, identify the character, describe the battle the character takes part in and what happens as a result, and explain how the character’s experience is important to the work as a whole.

In the novel, "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger, a character that has a literal and figurative battle is Holden. Holden is has a figurative battle because of the girl he likes. Holden is craving the girl's attention but has no way to get it. The girl's name is Jane. He thinks that Jane is perfect everything about her seems perfect to him. Also the other figurative battle he has is school. Holden is failing all his classes except English. Also he gets kicked out of the school, Pencey Prep, its not the first time. He's been kicked out of different schools many times.
A literal battle Holden is has is with Stradlater because of the girl Holden likes. Holden is provoking Stradlater to hit him because Holden got him so mad he doesn't care. Stradlater gave him a lot of warnings but Holden didn't listen. Holden did a sneaky move he hit Stradlater blindside. So of course Stradlater started hitting him back. Stradlater pin him to the floor then Holden screaming at him calling him names and making Stradlater more mad. Stradlater gave him one last warning then he hit Holden hard knocking him out for a little bit. That is how Holden had a figurative and literally great battle not only with himself but with other people.
