Monomyth Essay by Eliyah Wheeler Lyrics
The epic hero monomyth is an important chart to follow because it shows the steps every hero in a movie or story follows. It follows the journey of someone as they are called to adventure, face trials, get treasure and return home. Every hero must start at some basic point, but they end up a changed person. This monomyth appears in both Star Wars and the VGHS mini YouTube series and because of this their characters can be easily compared.
Luke Skywalker was a normal teenager waiting for his life to get some adventure. His status quo began on a farm on Tatooine when he was hoping for his life to have more meaning than just farming. Luke got his call to adventure when one of his droids played a mysterious message from Princess Leia. She needed help and Luke had to go to Obi-Wan/Ben Kenobi. Obi-Wan’s assistance came into play when he told Luke that he can come with him, but having no experience and only being a teenager Luke was reluctant. Through his journey in space Luke found the Princess, but they became trapped in a compacting garage shoot and this was one of the trials he faced along the way. The hero made it out alive and gained more strength as he battled Darth Vader and also gained a treasure by beat him with one blast, destroying the death star. Luke fulfills the epic hero monomyth because he left his old, normal life behind for one with adventure and hardships, but he returned a hero.
Similar to Luke Skywalker, BrianD was an average teenager who did nothing more than play video games. Brian’s call to adventure came when he was playing in a tournament with his friends and entered in the tournament was the Law. The Law was a top gamer who was globally recognized for his talents. The Law had defeated all of BrianD’s friends and only had Brian left. Being away from his keyboard The Law had a clear shot of Brian until he returned and defeated The Law. BrianD’s accomplishment was so recognized he was accepted into Video Game High school, a prestigious school for video gamers. Brian was faced with many trials, one being his game trials of getting into the school. Brian was in crisis when he was expelled from VGHS for starting a school wide brawl. Brian still gets his treasure when he was allowed to play in a school tournament and once again beat the Law and was reinstated in school. BrianD fulfills the epic hero monomyth because he stepped out of his ordinary gaming at home life for a whole new world of gaming where he proved himself with trials and beat the number one gamer at Video Game High school.
BrianD is a better role model for people today. BrianD’s journey was better because he did not give up. In his story Brian lived a regular life and with one move he was changed. He went from an ordinary gamer nerd to a well-recognized player just by doing what he did best. He was face with trials and exceeded in them. He was ejected from school, but still returned to complete in a tournament because he made a promise to do so. This ended in his return to school because he was a good player and did what he had to do for the game. Both characters fulfill the monomyth cycle, but BrianD’s story is one to follow.
After comparing both stories, BrianD had a better story. All characters must go through this journey. Luke Skywalker went from being a farmer boy to destroying the death star. BrianD was a home gamer before he became a well known gamer. It is important to understand this model because it is followed in anything you read or watch.
