The Depth of the Sea by Elissa Moy Lyrics
The Depth of the Sea
The shining white pearl was in my grasp.
My dark waves leapt higher than
The fair ships thirsting to conquer me.
My current controlled the fish, land, and sea.
I was approached by a stream of substance;
He told me my white pearl had been stolen,
Caught, sold, by one of many ships
I had feared.
My heart was not altered.
I told him, “Make me to see ‘t” (1),
For only when the sea saw her rise
Out of my dark waters,
And when it heard her ornamental cries
Mixed with a ship’s obscene, triumphant shouts
Would my waters be subdued,
Would my eyes turn dark.
This substance--his words clouded my mind.
His words made my suspicions
"Arise from within" (2).
I saw through the goggles that he swam across my eyes.
My pearl became tarnished,
Somehow worn by my loving waves.
I used my current to push her away,
Never thinking to swim
Past the pollution and pick up
The frequencies of her despair.
Though “I saw ‘t not” (3) and heard it not,
I believed my pearl had left me;
Had swam up on shore,
Or let herself be captured by a shimmering ship
That matched her own physiognomy.
I thought this substance “Sees and knows more” (4)
Than my own senses could reveal.
This substance--pollution--made me lose
My “usual self-control” (5), trusting his sight and sounds
Over my own.
Fallen "from glory to misery" (6)
Into the depths of the sea,
My “own freely-chosen acts” (7) brought
The blackness and pressure to crush me.
I am forever trapped in
“Stabbing pain and memory" (8).
The shining white pearl was in my grasp.
My dark waves leapt higher than
The fair ships thirsting to conquer me.
My current controlled the fish, land, and sea.
I was approached by a stream of substance;
