Survivors root through the splintered wreckage of their homes searching for loved ones who may be buried beneath. Others are scrambling to find food and water in areas littered with corpses.Three days after Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms in recorded history, scythed across the central Philippines, people here are struggling to grasp the enormity of what they have lost and the challenges they face The storm, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, has left devastation on a monumental scale in its wake Thousands of houses have been obliterated. Many areas are still cut off from transport, communications and power. Some officials say that as many as 10,000 people may have been killed.

The hundreds of thousands of typhoon victims in the Philippines need help and they need it now, the U.S. Marine Corps general in charge of the U.S. military relief effort says. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy told CNN he needs immediate dispatch of U.S. Navy amphibious ships that carry equipment that can make potable water and the variety of helicopters, small boats, trucks and other supplies needed in the relief effort. "They are the Swiss army knife of the U.S. military," Kennedy said of the amphibious ships, speaking to CNN in a telephone interview from the Philippines. Kennedy says he believes his request will be approved by the Pentagon in the coming hours.

The panorama, released Tuesday, was captured by the Cassini spacecraft on July 19, when the sun slipped behind the ringed planet. Earth appears as a bright blue dot to Saturn's lower right, just above Saturn's outer, halo-like E-ring.Venus is a dot to the upper left, with Mars appearing as a faint red dot above and to the left of Venus. This is the first image in which Saturn, its moons and rings, and Earth, Venus and Mars are all visible, NASA said. The image -- a panorama of 141 wide-angle pictures -- covers 404,880 miles across Saturn and its ring system.Cassini images showing both Saturn and Earth are rare because the sun is so close to Earth, that targeting the blue planet would damage Cassini's sensors, NASA says. The July 19 image was possible because Saturn blocked out the sun.

More than a week after Typhoon Haiyan laid waste to much of the central Philippines, a health official said Friday that some victims are living off the land."One of the impressions is that there was total absence of food and water," Health Undersecretary Janette Garin said in a television interview, according to the state-run Philippine News Agency (PNA). "Some victims survived on coconut juice."That assessment came as crews were continuing to collect bodies from streets and rubble, raising to 3,621 the national disaster agency's official death count. The number of injured stood at 12,165, PNA reported. At least 1,140 were missing.

Toronto's City Council voted Friday to strip embattled Mayor Rob Ford of his ability to govern in case of an emergency and to appoint and dismiss his senior staff, unprecedented moves aimed at reining in the controversial politician Despite admitting last week that he had smoked crack cocaine in a "drunken stupor" about a year ago, Ford has defiantly said he will not leave his job."Obviously, I can't support this," Ford told council members, saying that the legal fight to follow will cost taxpayers "an arm and a leg." But, he added: "I perfectly understand where they're coming from." "Council delegated those powers and council has the ability to take those powers away," City Solicitor Anna Kinastowski said at one point in the meeting. While fighting for his job Thursday, Ford added to his growing list of missteps.
