Letter to Governor Janice Brewer: Request to Veto SB1062 by Arizona State Senate Lyrics
February 24, 2014
The Honorable Janice K. Brewer
Governor of the State of Arizona
1700 West Washington, 9th Floor
Phoenix, AZ 85007
Dear Governor Brewer:
At the core of our great nation's foundation is the principle of religious freedom and tolerance. As Arizona State Senators, we have sought to defend and safeguard these constitutionally guaranteed liberties against any erosion.
The state legislature has recently passed SB1062, exercise of religion; state action, which is intended to protect all individuals' free exercise of their religious beliefs.
While our sincere intent in voting for this bill was to create shield for all citizens' religious liberties, the bill has instead been mischaracterized by its opponents as a sword for religious intolerance. These allegations are causing our state immeasurable harm.
As Arizona leaders we feel it is important to loudly proclaim that we strongly condemn discrimination in any form.
We must send a clear message that Arizona is a state that values religious tolerance and protects values each individual's ability to follow the dictates of their own conscience.
We respectfully ask that you veto SB1062.
Sincerely,
Senator Adam Driggs, District 28
Senator Steve Pierce, District 1
Senator Bob Worsley, District 25
