The epic hero mono myth still till this day is important concept because of the fact that is has appeared in movies like,Star Wars and the Hunger games, where it provides a good role model and influence for people to follow.Where hero must go through a journey which usually consists of twelve steps.
Luke Skywalker achieves the role of an epic hero mono myth when he completes the twelve step cycle. Luke’s journeys starts off when he is in his farm, living a normal life until he unexpectedly gets a message from Princess Leia and is mesmerized by her voice and physical appearance that he decides to make a departure and leave his ordinary life with the assistance of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Who helps and guides him along the way. Luke is then confronted by his greatest enemy, Dark Vader. Where he watches Vader kill his master Obi-Wan Kenobi and die right in front of his eyes. This affects him so much that it makes Luke depressed. But this was not for long, because Luke regains himself and comes back stronger. He then destroys the death star which results in Dark Vader’s fighter spinning out of control. At last Luke goes back home as a new man and improves the life of others around him. Where Luke finally receives a metal from Princess Leia just like how the story started when she gave message.
My character, Katniss Everdeen also fulfills the epic hero mono myth in different ways. This beginning when Katniss is in her normal life, District 12 where she takes the role of the adult when her father passes away and lives with her mom and little sister. They struggle to make end meet with Katniss having to hunt for their food. But this drastically changes when she is then called to an adventure, where she volunteers to take her sisters place as tribute during the reaping. With the help and guidance of haymitch ,a drunk addict and District twelve's only victorian.Who teaches her how to survive and train for the games with he's knowledge and guidance. Katniss then, departures from her normal life when she travels to the capital by train. Along her journey she has to face obstacles in order to survive. Some of these obstacles where her trying to get her hands on food and water in order to keep going and having to kill people that were after her. She then had to confront her greatest enemy .Which in this case was the other kids in the games whom she tried to stop when she found a bee hive and dropped on them. Katniss then had a crisis moment when she discovered that she had gotten bitten by one of the bees and was hallucinating. This caused her to pass out and lose track of the other competitors and get behind .After this, her treasure was when she and peeta allied and teamed up, this changed the rules of the game which meant that now two people could win, Not only one. However this changed, as soon as the people in charge of the game found out, they immediately changed the rules once again and decide that only one person could win. This resulted in both of them threatening to suicide but were then crowned winners. In the end Katniss returned home but as a changed person because she now had money and could provide her family with food, but also came back knowing a lot more about how the whole games worked.
In my opinion, a role model should be someone you look up to and someone that you inspire to be and with that being said I strongly believe that Katniss Everdeeen was a better role model than Luke Skywalker for many reasons. One reason would be that she displayed bravery and selflessness. She thought about her sister instead of herself when she volunteered herself. Another reason would be that Katniss showed that she was able to overcome obstacles and could keep going no matter what got in her way. She was determined and didn't let anything stop her. The epic hero mono myth is a twelve step cycle that a hero must undergo.
In conclusion, the hero mono myth is important to understand because it is a cycle that every hero uses throughout films even today. Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger games and Luke Skywalker from Star Wars are both great examples of a epic hero mono myth because they both go through different but at the same time similar phases.
