In the early 19th century, the romantics’ emphasis on mystical and supernatural led to a revival of traditional religious belief. The Jesuit order had been suppressed in 1773 at the height of the Enlightenment. In England, a group of Anglicans, known as the Oxford movement, reasserted Catholic elements in the faith and practice of the Church of England.
